The fish had lockjaw today……..

halibut8-22-09-002.jpghalibut8-22-09-001.jpgYou can’t win ‘em all, I guess.  We fished hard from sun up to 1600 and got a halibut and a bonita, plus a few calicos and rock fish and a stinking bat ray.  We had several break offs and at least one of them was a WSB.  The wind changed direction 20 times as a front was moving down from the north.  At least everyone was good sports about the lousy fishing.  Better luck next time.

Nothing but big halibut today

halibut8-21-09-002.jpghalibut8-21-09-006.jpghalibut8-21-09-004.jpgToday was a day that good fishermen made me look good by loading the FUJI III with quality halibut.  (Mike Wolfe party) We started out looking for yellowtail and white sea bass but they just weren’t biting.  The good news was that the halibut were on fire.  We got five total, smallest about 15 and biggest probably over 40 pounds.  It wouldn’t even come close to fitting in my 4 foot ice chest.  We also got a good release on a 60 to 70 pound black sea bass after a 30 minute struggle on light tackle.  These guys are welcome back on FUJI III any time.  Thanks guys!

Big halibut and some rockfish

parks8-13-09-003.jpgparks8-13-09-002.jpgparks8-13-09-001.jpgFuji III was chartered by the Park family from Agoura Hills today.  We went out to the Islands in calm foggy weather and put two big halibut aboard right away.  It was hard to get a decent drift going with current opposite the breeze.  Went to the rockfish spot and loaded up some “endangered” bocaccio and assorted rockfish.  Calicos and yellowtails never bit for us.  Early day, back in the slip by 1515 to fillet halibut.

Two sea bass and two halibut plus

halibut8-9-09-003.jpghalibut8-9-09-005.jpghalibut8-9-09-008.jpgCharter today with Kevin, Beth, Justin and Jason.  Beautiful weather and flat calm seas!  We got two nice halibut, two white sea bass, and two barracuda plus the usual calicos and rock fish.  The big fish was a black sea bass that was around 5 feet long and estimated weight 100 pounds.  It was a monster that took 30 minutes of hard work to get up.  He was successfully revived and returned to the deep.  Fun day at the Islands.

Bad weather, good fishing

halibut8-5-09-003.jpghalibut8-5-09-002.jpgWent out today with Mark the Dock Troll’s kids.  Forecast was good but the weather was bad.  We got beat up going across and beat up coming back.  The good news is that it stopped blowing mid day, just when the halibut turned on.  We got 5 nice ones, should have been seven.  One thrashed off the gaff and one big one wrapped up a kelp stringer right behind the boat and spit the hook.  Also picked up some nice calicos and rock fish.  Broke off a good sized yellowtail too.
